FREDRIK LEVANDER, PhD, is Associate Professor at the Department of Immunotechnology, Lund University and a member of the Lund University Cancer Center (LUCC).
WHAT IS THE FOCUS OF YOUR RESEARCH?
We focus on comprehensive protein measurements to understand biology and disease. Our main tool is mass spectrometry, and we develop computational methods to get the most out of the large volumes of data that are generated by this technique. We collaborate with different cancer researchers to improve our understanding of disease mechanisms and to find protein markers that can be used for precision medicine.
WHAT IMPACT DO YOU HOPE THAT YOUR RESEARCH WILL HAVE ON CANCER CARE/CANCER PATIENTS?
In many cases measurements of a panel of markers for precise classification of cancers can help in selecting the optimal treatment for cancer patients. Our collaborative research projects can contribute by revealing potential new markers for better patient stratification as well as new drug targets.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBILITIES FOR COMMERCIALIZING YOUR RESEARCH (FOR THE BENEFIT OF PATIENTS)?
New diagnostic or prognostic tests based on measurements of specific proteins can be commercialized and implemented in the clinic as tools for guiding treatment selection.
