MedInnovation 2025 – Skåne driving growth in Swedish life science

The Swedish life science sector is gaining momentum, driven by an updated national life science strategy and increased investments in medical research creating new opportunities for accelerated innovation. On Tuesday, March 11, key representatives from national and regional levels gathered at Medicon Village in Lund for the MedInnovation conference, which focused on how Skåne can play a pivotal role in strengthening Sweden’s position as a global life science leader in the years ahead.
A packed auditorium welcomed this year’s MedInnovation conference. Held annually, the conference has evolved into a vital forum for politicians, executives, researchers, healthcare professionals, patient representatives, and industry leaders. The event fosters inspiration, discussion, and learning, with an emphasis on how innovation and research that takes place close to patients can shape future healthcare through collaboration between healthcare, industry, and academia. The conference was arranged in close collaboration between Medicon Village, Region Skåne, and Lif (the trade association for the research-based pharmaceutical industry in Sweden).
Among the speakers were Jeanette Edblad from the Government Offices’ life science division, who presented the newly updated national life science strategy, alongside Sofia Wallström, CEO of Lif, and Karin Eidolf, Sweden Country Manager at Bayer Pharma AB.
The conference showcased several promising initiatives in Skåne, highlighting the region’s strength and innovative capacity. Notable mentions included Medicon Village’s new collaboration with AstraZeneca, Skåne University Hospital, and Lund University’s School of Economics and Management to accelerate the adoption of innovations in Swedish healthcare. The event also spotlighted efforts around advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) and the importance of close cooperation with Copenhagen.
”It is clear that global competition for talent, company establishments, and capital is fierce, and we must work together to strengthen our position. At the same time, Skåne has all the conditions for success — with leading university environments, top-quality university healthcare, and innovative companies at the forefront of research” said Petter Hartman, CEO of Medicon Village Innovation.
The conference concluded with networking opportunities and a promise that MedInnovation will return in 2026, continuing to drive the conversation on how Swedish life science can lead the way globally.
