New Medicon Village laboratory house inaugurated

Medicon Village

Medicon Village today inaugurated a new building for laboratory operations, thereby strengthening its role as the natural hub for research and entrepreneurship in life sciences in Southern Sweden. The lack of suitable premises for research companies risks hampering the growth of the life sciences sector in Medicon Valley. Through this investment of 12,500 sqm spread over 4 floors, the conditions for continued expansion in the coming years are reinforced.

The building is the first laboratory facility constructed at Medicon Village since AstraZeneca left Lund in 2012 and represents the largest investment in laboratory capacity in Skåne in many years. The new laboratory building is a significant contribution to positioning Skåne as one of Scandinavias leading life science regions.

Three key reasons behind Medicon Villages decision to construct a new laboratory building were to strengthen the infrastructure within southern Swedish life sciences, create laboratory spaces for biotechnology companies experiencing growing pains, and increase laboratory capacity for the more than 2,800 employees across more than 180 companies and organisations in the research village, including SmiLe Incubator.

We have worked on developing the project around laboratory facilities for several years, and todays inauguration of the new building marks a milestone for Medicon Village. The building creates opportunities for existing companies to expand and also opens up possibilities for new companies to establish and grow with us. It feels very rewarding to continue this investment and to ensure that Mats Paulssons goalthat the surplus from the property company should fund important research in the regioncan be realised, said Erik Jagesten, CEO of Medicon Village Fastighets AB.

The new laboratory building strengthens Lunds reputation as a research and university city and helps position Medicon Village as the natural hub for life sciences in southern Sweden. The investment is also significant from an Øresund perspective, as we see great potential in attracting more Danish companies to Skåne. A stronger research exchange across the strait is important for the regions competitiveness, said Petter Hartman, CEO of Medicon Village Innovation AB.

In addition to Redoxis, Truly Labs, Alligator Bioscience, and Cellevate, SARomics Biostructures is one of the first companies to move into the new building. The company specialises in protein structure determination and rational drug development and has been based at Medicon Village since the research village was established in 2012.

Having three times the space in the new building is essential for our companys survival and expansion in Lund. Additionally, having the opportunity to help design the spaces to suit our operations is an incredible advantage, said Björn Walse, CEO of SARomics Biostructures AB.

Medicon Village has set high climate responsibility goals and in 2023 became the first science park in the Nordics to be sustainability verified according to ISO 26000. The new laboratory building is environmentally certified and connected to the award-winning Ectogrid energy system, a system developed by E.ON, where properties with different energy needs are linked to store energy and share excess heat and cooling. Medicon Village was the first to install this energy solution.
