From global recovery to Sweden’s “Brainomics” – key insights from our C-level network dinner

Medicon Village

Yesterday, nearly 50 senior leaders from across the life science sector gathered at Medicon Village for the second edition of Executive Outlook 2025 – our exclusive network for C-level executives. Over dinner, we had the privilege of having Annika Winsth, Chief Economist at Nordea Sweden, share insights from Nordea’s freshly released Economic Outlook Q3 2025.

Her keynote explored how global geopolitics and shifting macroeconomic conditions are shaping Swedish business, innovation and consumer confidence, and was followed by a thought-provoking discussion moderated by Sarah Lidé, Deputy CEO of Medicon Village Innovation.

Key insights from the session included the following:

  • A steady but uneven path ahead. While new global trade deals have reduced uncertainty, US debt levels and continued dollar weakness remain significant risks.
  • Watch the Fed. If there is one indicator to monitor for the direction of the global economy, it is the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions.
  • China’s paradox. Domestic demand remains weak, yet its role as a global economic power cannot be ignored. Finding constructive ways to engage with China will be critical.
  • Sweden’s cautious recovery. Fiscal stimulus is helping the economy regain momentum. Early signs of households borrowing again suggest that consumer confidence is slowly returning, even as the labour market remains fragile.
  • The role of trust. Beyond financial indicators, societal trust is a central glue for democratic resilience. Safeguarding it is essential for a stable future.
  • A final note of optimism. Sweden’s “Brainomics” model – rooted in a highly skilled workforce, top-tier R&D, and strong service exports – has placed the country among the global leaders in innovation and competitiveness. Preserving and strengthening this model will be key to securing the future growth of Swedish life science.

Executive Outlook is a C-level network hosted and organised by Medicon Village that meets twice a year, where experts bring insights and discussions that are top of mind for the executive agenda in the life science sector.
