The Barometer is an annual initiative which aims to create a data-driven snapshot that present a current and comprehensive view of the Swedish life science sector – its achievements, challenges, and evolving needs, to policymakers, investors, and international stakeholders. These insights play a key role in securing more targeted support for the sector and in strengthening Sweden’s position as a globally recognised life science country.
Last year’s report included the following key findings:
- The Swedish life science industry is a key contributor to the Swedish economy, with a net turnover of 474 billion SEK and accounting for almost 10% of exports.
- The industry mainly consists of small and young companies with burgeoning potential in the form of intellectual assets. Most companies focus on global markets as they further develop these assets.
- One in two respondent companies are a part of the community like Medicon Village. This rises to three in four among the youngest companies (0-4 years old).
- The current state of the industry is optimistic despite financial challenges. Most executives in life science are planning for business expansion and the innovation of new products.
“The Barometer provides a clear and useful picture of the state of the life sciences industry and a trend forecast. We in the Life Science Office need this together with other information to be able to be as relevant and strategic as possible in our information to the responsible ministers. We are therefore grateful to all companies and stakeholders who choose to contribute to it. A copy of the latest Barometer is always on my desk!”
– Jeanette Edblad, Head of the Life Science Office at the Government Offices.
