In this year’s edition of Medicon Village’s Life Science Barometer 2025 – Skåne Edition, the region’s continued rise as one of Sweden’s most dynamic hubs for life science innovation, entrepreneurship, and international patent activity takes centre stage.
The report provides a comprehensive overview of Skåne’s life science sector, combining hard data with CEO sentiment and insights from industry leaders. This year’s edition was produced by Medicon Village in collaboration with Potter Clarkson, and is based on data from Vinnova, Insight Machine, and survey responses from the national Life Science Barometer 2025, published by SwedenBIO in December 2024.
Some noteable facts in this year’s edition:
- Skåne is home to approximately 680 life science companies and organisations, collectively employing around 7,400 professionals. Notably, 122 of these companies were established between 2018 and 2022.
- The sector is characterised by a high proportion of micro-sized companies (fewer than 10 employees), which account for 84% of all life science businesses in the region.
- Medtech is the dominant segment, with 58% of Skåne-based life science companies active in this field, followed by pharma (39%) and biotech (24%). There is significant overlap between these segments, reflecting the sector’s interdisciplinary nature.
- Skåne’s life science sector has a strong focus on research and development, with 36% of companies engaged in R&D – higher than the average for the rest of Sweden (27%).
- The industry is primarily concentrated in Lund and Malmö, which together account for 70% of the region’s life science workforce and 63% of its companies.
