Medicon Village founder Mats Paulsson awarded Honorary Doctorate in Lund
Mats Paulsson has been named an Honorary Doctor by the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University. The title has been awarded in recognition of his significant contributions to medical research. The conferment ceremony will take place on 23 May 2025.
Entrepreneur Mats Paulsson is being honoured for his longstanding commitment to medical research and his role in establishing Medicon Village in Lund. Over the years, he has founded three foundations supporting public-benefit initiatives, particularly in the fields of medical research and healthcare.
One of these is the Mats Paulsson Foundation for Research, Innovation, and Societal Development, established in 2011. This foundation played a pivotal role in the creation of Medicon Village, which has since become a leading and unique environment for research and business.
By reinvesting profits from Medicon Village’s operations and returns from the foundation into research, groundbreaking projects in areas such as cancer and neuroscience have been funded. Earlier this year, coinciding with Mats Paulsson's 80th birthday, it was announced that the foundation's research funding would be increased from SEK 25 million to SEK 50 million in 2024. Altogether, Paulsson’s various foundations have donated nearly a quarter of a billion Swedish kronor to health-promoting research.
“It is a great honour to be named an Honorary Doctor, and it confirms the importance of working together. By supporting medical research, we can address health challenges and contribute to people’s health and better lives,” says Mats Paulsson.
An honorary doctorate in medicine is a distinction awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Faculty of Medicine’s research and education. The faculty board is responsible for selecting the year’s Honorary Doctors. The conferment ceremony will take place on 23 May 2025.
