Technology as a geopolitical force – Key highlights from this year’s first edition of Executive Outlook

Medicon Village

Yesterday, close to 50 senior leaders from across the life science sector gathered for this year’s first Executive Outlook session at Medicon Village. Over an intimate dinner, keynote speaker Sylvia Schwaag Serger, President of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, shared reflections on navigating an increasingly complex global landscape, and what it means for Sweden’s long-term competitiveness. Her presentation was followed by a discussion moderated by Medicon Village Innovation’s Deputy CEO Sarah Lidé, bringing together perspectives on how Sweden and the life science sector can respond to these shifts.

A central theme in the discussion was how both geopolitics and technological development are reshaping the way countries and regions engage with one another, where access to critical technologies, data, and infrastructure increasingly defines partnerships and alliances. Against this backdrop, the evolving roles of major global actors such as the US and China were brought into focus. Europe, meanwhile, finds itself navigating a more complex position – balancing openness with the need to strengthen resilience, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty.

A key takeaway from the evening was the growing importance of strategic prioritisation at the national level. In a world where resources, capabilities, and political attention are increasingly directed towards selected areas of importance, countries must make clearer choices about where to lead, where to collaborate, and how to position themselves globally. For Sweden, this raises important questions around how to sustain its strengths in research, innovation, and trust-based collaboration, while adapting to a more competitive and security-conscious environment.

The Executive Outlook network is Medicon Village’s exclusive, biannual forum for C-level executives and senior leaders within the life science sector. By creating a trusted space for dialogue, the network enables decision-makers to exchange strategic insights and reflect on the trends and challenges shaping both the Swedish and global life science industries.
