Unique energy solution reduces Medicon Village’s carbon footprint

Medicon Village

Medicon Village science park and energy company E.ON have solidified their partnership with an agreement aimed at advancing and maintaining the award-winning energy system, E.ON ectogrid™. Since its inception in 2019, the ectogrid™ energy system has undergone continuous refinement, resulting in a remarkable 50% reduction in supplied energy to Medicon Village, an amount equivalent to heating around 400 houses, and a substantial 70% decrease in CO2 emissions. This new agreement with E.ON ensures a continued long-term energy supply for Medicon Village.

Erik Jagesten, CEO of Medicon Village Fastighets AB, emphasised the importance of embracing innovations that contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, especially for a science park dedicated to enhancing people’s health and quality of life. He stated, ”Our most significant opportunity to contribute to sustainable development, from a real estate perspective, is to minimise our energy consumption. E.ON ectogrid™ is a crucial component in achieving a reduction in supplied energy and was key when Medicon Village became the first science park in Scandinavia to be sustainability verified according to the ISO 26000 standard.”

The system works by utilising excess cooling and heat from one building to regulate the temperature in another, facilitating the sharing and balancing of energy not just within the Medicon Village area, but also to 300 adjacent apartments. This approach ensures that low-grade excess heat and cooling, which would typically go to waste, are effectively utilised, thereby reducing the overall demand for supplied energy.

Johan Mörnstam, CEO of E.ON Sweden, highlighted the significance of the collaboration with Medicon Village in propelling the expansion of E.ON ectogrid™. He noted, ”There is significant interest in the ectogrid™ system both in Sweden and internationally, and the continued trust from Medicon Village is evidence that the product is commercially viable and ready for a larger market.”

The success of E.ON ectogrid™ was further underscored by its recent recognition at the climate conference COP28 in Dubai, where it clinched the Energy Transition Changemakers award. The energy system stood out among approximately 1,000 other innovative projects driving the energy transition.
