Kristian Pietras awarded ‘Årets Cancerforskare’ by the Swedish Cancer Society

Kristian Pietras, Professor of Molecular Medicine at Lund University, has been awarded the title of Årets Cancerforskare (Cancer Researcher of the Year) by Cancerfonden (the Swedish Cancer Society). Based at Medicon Village, Professor Kristian Pietras and his research team study how cells in blood vessels and connective tissue influence cancer’s ability to grow or die.
The jury’s motivation:
”Through outstanding research on the tumour microenvironment, Kristian Pietras has provided key insights into how cells in blood vessels and connective tissue interact with tumour cells. By mapping and influencing the signals between these cells, he is opening the door to new treatment methods that could halt tumour growth.”
”This award means a great deal to me. I am so pleased that the discoveries made by our research group are being recognised, and I hope it will inspire us to raise the bar even higher in our research. But above all, I am delighted that the understanding of the environment surrounding a tumour is being acknowledged as an important way to combat cancer. I am convinced that this will benefit many cancer patients in the future,” says Kristian Pietras, Professor of Molecular Medicine at Lund University.
