MedInnovation in Skåne 2026: Strengthening Competitiveness in a Changing Global Landscape

Medicon Village

Record-breaking interest and a full auditorium at Medicon Village set the tone for MedInnovation in Skåne 2026, held on 10 February and hosted by Medicon Village, Lif – the research-based pharmaceutical companies, and Region Skåne. The strong turnout reflected a shared urgency: how to safeguard and strengthen Sweden’s and Skåne’s position in an increasingly competitive global life science landscape.

Over the years, MedInnovation in Skåne has established itself as a strategic forum for dialogue at the intersection of healthcare, industry, and academia. The common denominator is clear – innovation must translate into patient benefit.

This year’s discussions centered not only on generating innovation, but on scaling and implementing it. Key questions included:

  • How competitive are Sweden and Skåne in a shifting geopolitical and economic environment?
  • How can the pharmaceutical industry contribute to sustainable, high-quality healthcare systems?
  • How do we accelerate the implementation of innovations in clinical practice while strengthening regional growth?
  • What new partnerships and successful models can be replicated and scaled?

Competing on a Global Stage

In the opening keynote, Jenni Nordborg, Head of External Relations at Lif, provided a strategic outlook on Sweden’s position on the global life science map. As competition for R&D investments intensifies, smaller nations face increasing pressure to demonstrate both scientific excellence and implementation capacity.

The message was unequivocal: sustained and strategic investments in research and development are essential – not only to drive economic growth, but to ensure that patients in Sweden gain timely access to cutting-edge therapies.

Momentum in Skåne’s Innovation Ecosystem

Throughout the day, entrepreneurs from the Medicon Village ecosystem, healthcare leaders, and representatives of global companies shared insights on how collaboration is accelerating progress.

The pace of investment in Skåne’s research and innovation infrastructure has increased significantly in recent years. Initiatives highlighted during the conference included:

  • The development of an ATMP Center
  • The establishment of a Precision Medicine Center
  • New initiatives to improve access to health data
  • A robust and well-integrated regional innovation support system

Together, these efforts strengthen Skåne’s capacity to attract international partnerships, talent, and investment.

Addressing Structural Challenges

At the same time, participants were candid about the challenges ahead. Limited access to growth capital, intensifying global competition for talent, and structural barriers to implementing innovation within the Swedish healthcare system remain areas requiring coordinated action.

If Sweden and Skåne are to remain competitive, speed, alignment, and long-term commitment will be decisive factors.

The conference concluded with a panel discussion featuring leading regional politicians, focusing on how Skåne can consolidate and expand its position as one of Europe’s leading life science regions.

A Shared Commitment to Action

MedInnovation in Skåne brings together policymakers, researchers, healthcare professionals, patient representatives, and industry leaders – actors who collectively shape the future of healthcare.

The strong engagement throughout the day underscored a shared commitment: to translate Skåne’s scientific strengths into faster implementation, stronger growth, and improved patient outcomes.

The conversations continued during the networking reception, reinforcing what was evident throughout the conference – collaboration remains Skåne’s most powerful competitive advantage.
